Yes, once Vaarweginformatie.nl is taken into use, the RIS portal / RIS server will go offline. Vaarweginformatie.nl offers all information from the RIS portal and much more. It offers more functionalities and is easier to operate.

Does Vaarweginformatie.nl cover all waterways in the Netherlands?

Vaarweginformatie.nl covers virtually all waterways in category 1 and higher in the Netherlands. We also show the foreign shipping and water notifications we receive. This information covers the main waterways in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Does Vaarweginformatie.nl only show information that originates from Rijkswaterstaat?

Waterway information, operating times of locks and bridges and notifications to shipping also originate from other waterway operators. Vaarweginformatie.nl also shows the foreign shipping and water notifications we receive. This information covers the waterways in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and Switzerland.

Vaarweginformatie.nl offers bundled information about the waterways. It is not a route planner or a navigation system. Manufacturers of route planners can for that matter receive Vaarweginformatie.nl data in order to expand their systems.

If i want to change my subscription(data), after filling in my username and password correctly, it doesn't work correctly. What's the problem?

You probably have created a bookmark of the FIS-login screen in your favorites. Using this bookmark if you want to change your subscription, delivers this problem.
This problem is easily solved by browsing to the homepage of www.vaarweginformatie.nl. Choose the option Login at the top of the homepage. After logging on to this page, you can easily customize your subscriptions.

What is FIS?

FIS stands for Fairway Information Services. FIS is one of the River Information Services (RIS) that have been set up in a European context. FIS is intended to make nautical information accessible to domestic waterway users, the goal being: safe and efficient navigation. Vaarweginformatie.nl is the Dutch FIS.

Is Vaarweginformatie.nl the same as FIS?

Vaarweginformatie.nl is the Fairway Information Service (FIS) of the Netherlands.

Will there be a FIS for Europe? Do other countries also have a FIS?

European countries are developing their own FIS. Some of them are already operational. They can be found via the links on this website, under Foreign Notifications. There may be a European FIS in due time, but as yet there are no solid plans.

I can't find an existing object (e.g. a marina, trailer slipway) on the map, or it's shown incorrectly. Where do I go to post a comment/question about this?

Why can't I see a chart or map on the mobile site?

The functionality regarding the mobile site is still being development. Due to the available bandwidth on the waterways, the mobile site is at present mainly restricted to text. However, on the mobile site, you can opt for the "Desktop" version, making the entire site visible on most smartphones.

Does the chart or map also show water levels?

Some of the water levels are shown on the chart/map as so-called WRMs (Water-Related Messages). Also, the Hydro section shows a large quantity of water-related data.

Information on Vaarweginformatie.nl

Can I find navigable depths on Vaarweginformatie.nl?

Vaarweginformatie.nl gives water levels compared to the Amsterdam Ordnance Datum (NAP). In the event of low water levels, the MGD (Minst Gepeilde Diepte, or Lowest Waterway Depth) is published for the main transport axis of the Waal and a number of other main waterways, such as: Gelderse IJssel, Lower Rhine and Lek.

Where can I find more information about the terminology used, such as RIS, FIS, VIN, ENCs, Inland ECDIS, BAS, NtS, AIS,...?

There are several websites that provide explanations for this type of terminology, such as the sites of the Centrale Commissie voor de Rijnvaart (CCR, or Central Commission for Navigation of the Rhine), RIS Flanders, Bureau Telematica Binnenvaart (BTB, or Agency for Telematics in Inland Waterborne Transport) or  Europa.eu.

How can I search for notices to shipping (BASs, Notices to Skippers) for a certain section?

You can select certain areas or sections via Up-to-date Notifications - Shipping Notifications - Search. A number of standard sections are already defined. Once you are logged on, you can generate your own areas or sections.

What criteria does a password have to meet?

A password has 6 to 20 characters and should contain uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation marks (.,;:@).

How can I subscribe?

The My Waterway Information menu allows you to take out a free subscription to the information from Vaarweginformatie.nl that applies to you. You will then receive this information automatically. You can also indicate exactly which information you wish to receive, and how and when this information should be sent to you. You can subscribe to the standard information made available by Rijkswaterstaat. You can also compose your own publications for a selection of this information, and subscribe to that. Another possibility is that you can indicate that you only wish to receive certain information for a specific shipping area or section. This way, you will receive the information that applies to you. Do you need other information, or do you wish to unsubscribe? Not a problem, just create a new subscription or change or cancel your existing subscription(s).

I once subscribed to this service and keep getting text messages with information, but I don't want to receive them anymore. What should I do?

You can simply cancel your existing subscription(s) via the My Waterway Information menu.

What is RSS?

An RSS feed can be compared to a newsletter. The big difference is that visitors do not have to give their e-mail address in order to read the RSS feed, and that their RSS reader determines how the information in the feed is given. A lot of modern smartphones have the option to display RSS feeds. Many Internet browsers also have a feature to display RSS feeds.

Is the account secure when you use Wi-Fi?

Rijkswaterstaat cannot be held responsible for the data connection used. When sending personal details such as passwords, this isdone via a secured (https) connection.

Can I use Vaarweginformatie.nl with narrowband, like the one I've got on board?

Yes, the first time the website is started, you can select broadband or narrowband. The narrowband option can also be selected via the menu at all times.
