About this site
What information does this site offer?
This website gives you up-to-date information about the availability of waterways. This includes information about changes to the operating times of bridges and locks, obstructions, work in progress and changes to buoying and regulations. The information covers nearly all of the Dutch waterways. As an additional service, the site also provides information on the main waterways in Germany, Austria, France, Belgium and Switzerland.
You can also find static information, such as regular operating times of bridges and locks and ENCs (Electronic Navigational Charts). Finally, the site also provides information about water levels, swimming water quality and floating ice.
What is the source of this information?
The information on this website is gathered from various organisations. Provinces, city councils, water boards and port authorities are the competent bodies on 'their' waterways. The up-to-date Notices to Shipping (so-called BASs) are provided by the different waterway operators at home and abroad. The information is gathered and verified by the Waterkamer of Rijkswaterstaat (Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management).
Rijkswaterstaat manages the so-called VIN database, which includes characteristics of all waterways, such as their width, the operating times or dimensions of locks. As such, this database also contains information on other waterway operators.
ENCs are generated and submitted by the waterway operator in question.
All those providing information do their utmost to submit the right information at the right time. Nevertheless, Rijkswaterstaat cannot be held liable for incorrect data.
If you have any questions or comments about the quality of the data, please post them here and comments.
The information on this website relates to waterways from category 1 and higher. Data about category 0 is also included, provided it forms part of the recreational pleasure boating network. The pleasure boating network is announced by the Waterrecreatie Nederland.
Joint venture partners
This website has been set up as a joint venture platform of all waterway operators in the Netherlands. Rijkswaterstaat is the initiator and financer of the site and the underlying system.
Who manages www.vaarweginformatie.nl?
The website is managed by the Waterkamer of Rijkswaterstaat (formerly known as the Infocentrum Binnenwateren (Inland Waterways Service)).
In collaboration with, among others, waterway operators, the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute) and the regional notification centres of Rijkswaterstaat, the Waterkamer supports users and operators of the water system with notifications about normal and special circumstances.
